Worth knowing

  • A locoweed, and a common cause of livestock poisoning in North America. Its toxin is the alkaloid swainsonine, which affects cattle, sheep, horses and goats, as well as elk and mule deer. Horses are especially susceptible and do not recover. Wikipedia: Oxytropis sericea

This source reports two treatments. Both are shown.

Protocol 1

DerivedN. C. Deno, 1993

Difficulty High Rated by us, not by the source.

Start around February 8, 2027 for a May 3 last frost.

  1. Sow and cover

    Temperature: 70°F 21°C

No stated waiting before sowing. Then 56 days to germinate.

10% germination in 7–56 days.

Oxytropis (Fabiaceae). Oxytropis is typical of many Fabaceae. Some germination can be achieved without pretreatment, but such germination is generally slow and often extends over several cycles. if the seed is pretreated by grinding a hole throught the seed coat, germination is 100% in 1-3 d. The seeds are small so that the grinding is tedious and must be done carefully to avoid mechanical damage, but when done, it is dramatically effective. This was shown with 0. sericea germ. 70(10% in 1-8 w) and 40-7040(5%). 0. âhokanbetshensis germ. in late March from seed sown outdoors in Nov.

Protocol 2

DerivedN. C. Deno, 1993

Difficulty Very high Rated by us, not by the source.

Start around March 15, 2027 for a May 3 last frost.

  1. Cold moist stratification

    Temperature: 40°F 4°C

Germination happens during step 1; time not stated, 21 days assumed.

5% germination.
