Worth knowing
- Its other name, bodark, comes from the French bois d'arc, bow wood, for the Osage people's use of it for bows. Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center: Maclura pomifera
- Before barbed wire, rows of these thorny trees served as fences across the plains. Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center: Maclura pomifera
- The green fruit is the size of a grapefruit and inedible to people, though livestock eat it, hence horse-apple. Settlers made a yellow dye from the root bark. Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center: Maclura pomifera
Protocol
DerivedN. C. Deno, 1993Difficulty Moderate
Clean the flesh off the seed
Work the seed out of the pulp under water in a large pail; the latex sets to gum in air.
Leach in running water
Duration: 1–5 days
Wash and clean in water.
Leach in running water
Duration: 2–5 days
Then a detergent wash. It only removes the red-brown tar, but it keeps the job clean.
Sow and cover
10 days from start to sowing. Then 35 days to germinate.
90% germination in 14–35 days.
Every regime Deno tried -- 1-14 days of water, then 2-10 of detergent -- gave over 80%.
