Protocol 1

DerivedN. C. Deno, 1996

Difficulty Moderate Rated by us, not by the source.

Start around July 16, 2027 for a May 3 last frost. Too late for spring 2027 — that needed starting on July 15, 2026.

  1. Dry storage

    Duration: 180 daysTemperature: 70°F 21°C

  2. Cold moist stratification

    Temperature: 40°F 4°C

about 6 months from start to step 2. Germination happens during step 2, in 84 days.

38% germination in 70–84 days.

Eriogonum (Polygonaceae). E. allenii (fresh seed) germ. 72% in late March from seed placed outdoors in November. It also germ. 70D(12%) and 40-70D(30% on 2nd d). Light and GA-3 were injurious. Seeds DS 6 m at 70 germ. 70D(1%) and 40(38% in 10-12 w). The results are not as inconsistent as might appear. The fresh seed in the 40-70 pattern was almost ready to germinate after 12 w at 40 and might have germ. at 40 if the time at 40 had been extended.

Protocol 3

DerivedN. C. Deno, 1993

Difficulty Low Rated by us, not by the source.

Sow around November 2027 — a date the source gives, not one counted back from a May 3 last frost. Too late for spring 2027 — that needed starting on November 2026.

  1. Sow outdoors and leave it

Sown outdoors in November; up in late March.

No stated waiting before sowing. Then 120 days to germinate.

Eriogonum (Potygonaceae). Germination often occurred at comparable rates at 40 and 70, it often occurred throughout each 3 m cycle, and it often extended over two cycles. The data is summarized in the following Table except for E. allenii germ. 72% in late March from seed placed outdoors in November. It also germ. 70D(12%) and 40-70D(30% on 2nd d). Light and GA-3 were deleterious.
