Worth knowing

  • Brought to North America from Asia for soil conservation, as a hedge for grazing land and to attract wildlife, it is now an invasive species in the east. Wikipedia: Rosa multiflora

This source reports two treatments. Both are shown.

Protocol 1

DerivedN. C. Deno, 1993

Difficulty High Rated by us, not by the source.

Start around February 8, 2027 for a May 3 last frost.

  1. Clean the flesh off the seed

  2. Leach in running water

    Duration: 7 days

Washed and cleaned daily for 7 days.

  3. Cold moist stratification

    Duration: 90 daysTemperature: 40°F 4°C

  4. Warm moist stratification

    Duration: 90 daysTemperature: 70°F 21°C

    3 germinated in this phase.

  5. Cold moist stratification

    Duration: 90 daysTemperature: 40°F 4°C

  6. Warm moist stratification

    Duration: 90 daysTemperature: 70°F 21°C

Steps after step 3 run on after germination.

7 days from start to step 3. Germination happens during step 3, in 49 days.

26% germination in 35–49 days.

Rosa (Rosaceae). Germination -occurs largely at 40 and extends in an erratic manner over several cycles. All seed was WC 7 d. Although the seed coat is hard, grinding a hole through it did not initiate germination. In view of the results with two of the four species, outdoor treatment should be tried on the other two. A. multiflora germ. best in 40(26% in 5-7 w)-70(3%)-40-70. Germination is less in 70(8%)-40-70(3%)-40-70(3%) and less in seed sown outdoors (6% germ. in April). Seed DS 6 m at 70 or 40 was all dead.
